How Anxiety Affects Children, Teens, and Young Adults

Anxiety can present in many different forms, and its impact varies based on age and individual circumstances. Common signs of anxiety include:

  • Excessive Worry: Persistent worry about future events, school performance, or social situations.
  • Physical Symptoms: Headaches, stomachaches, dizziness, or trouble sleeping due to anxiety.
  • Avoidance Behaviors: Avoiding situations, places, or people that trigger anxiety.
  • Panic Attacks: Sudden and overwhelming feelings of fear, accompanied by physical symptoms such as a rapid heartbeat or shortness of breath.
  • Social Anxiety: Fear of being judged or embarrassed in social situations, which can lead to isolation.

These symptoms can negatively affect a child or teen’s schoolwork, friendships, and overall quality of life. Without proper intervention, anxiety can worsen over time, leading to ongoing struggles.

Our Approach to Anxiety Treatment

At Jasper Psychotherapy & Co., we take a comprehensive, individualized approach to anxiety treatment. We work closely with children, teens, and young adults to provide practical coping strategies, reduce anxiety symptoms, and build resilience. We offer therapy for anxiety with following services:

1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Anxiety

CBT is a highly effective treatment for anxiety. It helps individuals recognize and challenge negative thought patterns that contribute to anxiety, teaching them how to replace anxious thoughts with more realistic and balanced ones. CBT also provides relaxation and coping techniques to manage anxiety in everyday situations.

2. Exposure Therapy

Exposure therapy is a form of CBT where individuals gradually face their fears in a controlled and supportive environment. This approach helps reduce anxiety over time by desensitizing individuals to the situations or objects that trigger their anxiety, leading to improved confidence and coping.

3. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Mindfulness practices, such as deep breathing exercises and meditation, help individuals stay grounded in the present moment and reduce anxiety. We teach clients relaxation techniques to calm the body and mind, improving their ability to manage stress and anxiety.

4. Social Skills Training for Social Anxiety

For individuals with social anxiety, we provide social skills training to improve confidence in social situations. This includes teaching effective communication, building self-esteem, and practicing how to navigate social interactions in real-life scenarios.

5. Parent Coaching and Support

Anxiety doesn’t only affect the individual—it impacts the entire family. We offer parent coaching to help parents understand their child’s anxiety, learn how to provide support, and implement strategies to help their child cope with anxiety. Parents will learn how to create a supportive, anxiety-reducing home environment.
